Night patrol: which light for the doorway ahead and the lock in your hand?
On a night round? The light switches from the doorway ahead to the lock in your hand.
On a round you look at the doorway ahead, walk the floor, read a lock, then handle keys, a radio and a notebook. For the last three, your hands are busy.
If the torch your employer issues does the job, keep it. For close work with both hands busy, the Nitecore HA27 UHE headlamp: its 8 lumen setting is two presses from off, and it has red light. If you also choose your own torch, the MH12 Pro has a swappable battery and a holster in the box. Whether a headlamp is allowed on your site is for your employer to say.

One foot patrol round of a property at night, as a security officer. This page covers the light only. It does not cover hazardous atmospheres, live electrical work, confined spaces, roof edges and work at height, lifting, traffic control, weapons or confrontation. The Singapore guideline on what employers provide is further down.
- 7 momentsin one round where the light you need changes
- 8 lumensthe HA27 headlamp’s lowest white setting, two presses from off
- Both handsbusy with keys, a radio and a notebook
- Swapsthe MH12 Pro torch takes a spare battery (NL2155HP)
- Prepare at the guard post. Check the controls, the charge and the radio. Both hands are free.
- Look at the doorway ahead. See the marking or obstruction at the door, not only a bright patch.
- Walk the surface. See your footing and what is near your feet.
- Read the lock or tag. See every character without a reflected hotspot.
- Handle keys, radio and notebook. Your hands are full, so the light goes on your head.
- Record and report. Read your notes and write the log.
- If a light fails. Stop the round and return, or call for help.
Your round, step by step

How much runtime does your light need?
Most of a round the light is off or on its lowest setting. No source gives a round time, so the 24 minutes of light across six rounds and the 10 minute window for getting back or calling for help are our planning figures. Replace them with your own round.
What the night needs
hours
One HA27 battery gives 65 hours on the 8 lumen setting, measured at 26°C. The light gets dimmer as the battery drains. The MH12 Pro’s included battery gives 50 hours on 50 lumens.
What one battery gives
hours
Measured to the ANSI/PLATO FL 1-2019 standard. The HA27 figures are at 26°C.
How close you need to see
In your hand: the lock and its tag
At your feet: the floor and the step
Down the corridor: the doorway
Illustration, not a measured beam pattern.
What the light has to do
The lowest setting is for your hand. The torch is for the corridor. No source gives a distance or a target size for any step of a round, so this page gives none. Your site sets how far you need to see.
The MH12 Pro’s 505 m is where its beam fades to moonlight level on the turbo setting. It does not say how far you can read a marking.
What lumens do not say
The MH12 Pro has one tight hotspot and gives white light only. The HA27 has a wide flood beam. It has three colour settings: cool white (6,500 K, CRI 73), neutral white (4,500 K, CRI 83) and warm white (3,000 K, CRI 97).
If the battery runs down, or the lamp fails
Swap in a charged spare, standing still in a safe place: the NL2155HP for the MH12 Pro, the HLB1500 for the HA27. The HA27 also runs on 3 AAA batteries, without its turbo setting.
The other light, which has its own battery. A spare battery does not fix a broken or lost light.
Practical checklist
- Charge both lights at the post before each round. Two batteries do not help if you missed the charge on both.
- Lock both in your bag. On the HA27, hold both buttons for 2 seconds until it flashes 3 times, and repeat to unlock. For the MH12 Pro, see its manual.
- The two HA27 buttons differ in shape and touch. Learn them by feel: a double press of MODE is SOS.
- The MH12 Pro’s tail switch and side button can need a different grip.
- Carry the MH12 Pro in the holster from the box, or on its clip or lanyard. That carries it. It is not fall protection.
- The headband and clip are not approval to fit a headlamp to a helmet. Ask your employer and the helmet maker.
The kit we’d pack
- 50 lumens for 50 hours and 300 lumens for 8h30, on the included battery
- The battery swaps: a spare (NL2155HP) fits
- Holster, clip and lanyard come in the box
- Lowest setting (1 lumen): hold the side button, then click the tail switch
- Waterproof to 2 m under water (IP68), 82 g without the battery
- 8 lumens white, two presses of Power from off. 5 lumens red, hold MODE from off
- 65 hours on 8 lumens and 15 hours on 100 lumens, on one battery
- Lock it in your bag: hold both buttons for 2 seconds
- 100 g with its battery (HLB1500), which charges by USB-C in about 1h30
- Protected against strong water jets (IPX6)
Each light is the other’s backup. The torch your employer issues counts as well.
Already own a light? Check it against this list.
- It has a setting you can reach from off that is low enough to read a lock without glare.
- You can switch it off in one move.
- Your employer allows you to carry it.
- You can work its controls without looking.
- You have a second light with its own battery.
Other options

- Half-press and hold the power button for 15 lumens. Release and it goes off.
- The battery is built in, so you cannot swap it. Protected against splashing water (IP54).

- The same battery pack that comes with the HA27 UHE.
- 1,500 mAh, charges by USB-C in about 1h30.

- A 21700 cell, 5,500 mAh. Buy the HP, not the HPi, which is for i-Series lights.
- It has no USB port. It charges inside the MH12 Pro or in an external charger.
Runtimes measured on the setting and battery listed.
What the guideline says
-
Employee, Singapore private security WSH guideline, section 5.1 Patrolling
For poor lighting at night: “Wear reflective vest for external patrols & use torchlight.”
-
Employer, same table
“Provide the reflective vest & torchlight.”
-
Principal or occupier, same table
“Where possible to improve the lighting.”
-
Damaged or uneven flooring, same section
The officer should “Report or flag it out to Security Agency (SA).” The principal should “Ensure that the damaged flooring is promptly replaced or repaired.”
-
Ministry of Manpower, risk management
Workplaces should carry out risk assessments for routine and non-routine operations, and the light you are issued belongs inside that process.
The guideline is industry guidance. It names no lamp model, no lumen figure and no headlamp, and says its measures are suggestions to adapt to each workplace. Nothing here is approved or endorsed by SAS, USE, MOM or any security agency. The task list is an example from a US employer, not a Singapore patrol procedure.
Questions
My employer gives me a torch. Do I need anything else?
Not if the issued torch does the job. The Singapore private security guideline puts providing the torch on the employer. Test it on the doorway, the floor, the lock and your record. A round adds close work with both hands busy, which is where a headlamp helps.
Why a headlamp when I already carry a torch?
At a lock one hand holds the lock and the other holds the keys, with a radio and a notebook still to handle. A headlamp keeps the light on what your head faces and leaves both hands free. The HA27 gives 8 lumens two presses from off, and red light. Its beam follows your head, so it can sweep across a person's face when you turn.
Can I wear a headlamp on patrol?
Your employer decides. Ask what your post orders and the site's rules allow before you carry one. Do not fit a headlamp to a helmet unless your employer and the helmet maker have approved that exact combination.
Is this light certified for hazardous areas?
No. None of the lights on this page is certified for explosive atmospheres. Do not use any of them to light flammable or explosive materials. A water rating (IP68, IPX6 or IP54) does not make a light fit for any hazardous work.
Which setting for reading a lock?
The lowest setting that shows every character. On the HA27, double press Power from off for 8 lumens. On the EDC23, half-press and hold the power button for 15 lumens. On the MH12 Pro, hold the side button and click the tail switch for 1 lumen. If the label reflects, lower the setting or change the angle.
How long does a charge last?
Most of a round the light is off or on its lowest setting. One HA27 battery gives 65 hours on 8 lumens and 15 hours on 100 lumens, measured at 26°C. The MH12 Pro's included battery gives 50 hours on 50 lumens and 8h30 on 300 lumens. Charge both at the post before each round.
Can I use my phone torch?
A phone needs a hand, and your hands already hold keys or a radio. A headlamp keeps both free.
What does this guide not cover?
Hazardous atmospheres, live electrical work, confined spaces, roof edges and work at height, lifting, traffic control, weapons and confrontation. It is a buying guide for lights, not a patrol procedure.
