Working under the bonnet: which light when the bay light cannot reach?

A technician in safety glasses and nitrile gloves leaning into an engine bay with both hands behind a hose, a headlamp beam lighting the recess.

Working under the bonnet? The bay light stops at the first hose.

You look at the job with the bay light first and put a light where the shadow is. Then you reach in with both hands, and a headlamp follows your eyes.

Short answer

If your workshop already issues a light that reaches the recess, keep it. If you are buying: the Nitecore NWH20 headlamp on its middle setting, and the NWL20 work light on its hook or magnet, where you need light that stays put.

The job at a glance

Working under the bonnet, in wheel arches and in footwells that the bay lighting does not reach, plus looking at the paint finish of a part on a bench.

This page does not cover running engines, vehicle lifting, fuel, spraying and solvents, electrical or EV high voltage work, or hazardous atmospheres. Your workshop’s risk assessment covers those. The Ministry of Manpower says employers are responsible for identifying safety hazards and taking steps to eliminate or reduce the risks.

  • 0.3 to 0.6 mhow close you work to the target
  • Both handsin the bay, so the light cannot be held
  • 12 hNWH20 on its middle setting, one charge
  • 2 lightsone on your head, one that stays put

The job in six steps

  1. Look with the bay light firstNote what it leaves in shadow.
  2. Hang or stick a light in the shadowThen both hands are free.
  3. Reach in with the headlamp following your eyesRead the label or clamp at 0.3 to 0.6 m.
  4. Move a light to the shadow sideA hose or your own hand can block the first light.
  5. Check a painted part on the benchUnder your workshop’s own inspection light.
  6. Count every lamp and battery back inAgainst a checklist, at the end.

How much runtime does your light need?

One charge covers a working day. The NWH20 gives 12 hours on its middle setting (300 lumens), measured at 26°C. The light gets dimmer as the battery drains. The NWL20 comes with its NL2150 battery and charges by USB-C in about 3 hours. Charge both at the bench.

Hours of light on one charge

hours

One working day: 8 h (our assumption, not a shift rule)
NWH20, middle setting (300 lumens): 12 h
NWH20, low setting (150 lumens): 17 h
NWL20, flood, middle setting (260 lumens): 10h20
NWL20, flood, brightest setting (600 lumens): 6 h

Nobody publishes lamp-on hours for a workshop job, so the 8 hour day is our assumption. The brightest settings step down as the lamp heats up.

How close you need to see

View from above an open engine bay with the technician's gloved hands at the bottom of the frame, a headlamp beam lighting a hose clamp and label, the far side of the bay fading into shadow. Arm’s length: your own hands 0.3 m: the label or clamp you are working on 0.6 m: the far side of the bay

Illustration, not a measured beam pattern.

What those distances look like

  • 0.3 m: about one school ruler
  • 0.6 m: about two rulers end to end

At this range you want the flood end of the NWH20’s beam, which lights the clamp and the hose around it. Bright bare metal bounces the beam back at you, so tilt the lamp or switch the beam to flood.

The NWH20 is neutral white (4,500 K). The EDC09 has three colour settings with stated colour rendering (CRI): 97 warm, 83 neutral and 73 cool. No portable light on this page replaces your workshop’s finish and colour-match lighting.

If the battery runs down, or the lamp fails

Swap in a charged spare. The NWH20’s battery (WLB40) lifts out and a spare costs S$69. The NWL20 charges by USB-C.

Practical checklist

  • Charge both lights at the bench. The NWH20 takes about 4 hours and the NWL20 about 3 hours on a phone adapter. No charger is in either box.
  • Lock the NWH20 in the toolbox: with it off, hold both buttons for 2 seconds and it flashes 3 times. To unlock, hold both for 2 seconds again.
  • Keep the NWL20’s magnet off painted panels and away from electronics unless your workshop says otherwise. The magnet holds to iron and steel.
  • We have not tested the controls with gloves. Try them with the gloves you wear.
  • Count every lamp and battery back in at the end of the job.

  • It reaches the recess behind the first hose.
  • You can wear it or hang it, so both hands stay free.
  • It lasts your working day on one charge.
  • It has a lock, so it cannot switch on in the toolbox.
  • You have a second light with its own battery.

Questions

Can I use my phone torch?

Both hands are in the bay, so you cannot hold it. A headlamp or a hung light leaves them free.

Is this light certified for hazardous areas?

No. None of the lights on this page is certified for explosive atmospheres. The EDC09 manual says not to use it to illuminate flammable or explosive materials. Do not use any of them near fuel or solvent vapour.

Does the magnet damage paint or electronics?

The NWL20 magnet holds to iron and steel. We have no information on what it does to painted panels or electronics, so keep it off both unless your workshop says otherwise.

Which colour setting should I use to check paint?

None of these lights replaces your workshop’s inspection light. The same panel can look different under a different light, so judge colour under the lighting your workshop accepts. The colour figures are in how close you need to see.

How long does one charge last?

The NWH20 gives 12 hours on its middle setting, which covers an 8 hour working day. See the runtime chart for the other settings and the NWL20.

My workshop issues a light. Do I need this?

If it reaches the recess, keep it. Check it against the list in the kit section first.

What does this guide not cover?

The jobs listed in the job at a glance, and any workshop procedure. This is a guide to portable lights. Follow your workshop’s risk assessment.
